Early Treatment

s-braces3The Optimal Time to Start Orthodontics for Children

At Gustche Orthodontics, we can create a perfect smile at any age. However, along with the American Association of Orthodontists, we suggest that a child receive their first orthodontic evaluation at an early age. Early screening is key to catching orthodontic problems before they get worse, saving you time and potentially costly treatment. Please read through some of the common questions about early orthodontic treatment below.

The Best Time to Start Orthodontics

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends that the first orthodontic evaluation should occur at the first sign of orthodontic problems, or no later than the age of 7. Early evaluation provides timely detection of problems and greater opportunity for more effective treatment. At this young age, treatment may not be necessary but will help Dr. Gutsche and his team to determine the appropriate time for treatment to begin.

Why is Age 7 the Optimal Age for Orthodontic Screening?

Around the age of 7, the first adult molars erupt, which establish the back bite. During this time, Dr. Gutsche can evaluate front-to-back and side-to-side tooth relationships. For example, the possibility of an overbite, open bite, crowding or gummy smile can be detected by the presence of erupting incisors. Timely screening increases the chances for an incredible smile.

What are the Advantages of Interceptive Treatment?

Some results of early interceptive treatment include:

  • Creating room for crowded, erupting teeth
  • Creating facial symmetry through influencing jaw growth
  • Reducing the risk of trauma to protruding front teeth
  • Preserving space for unerupted teeth

Are You or Your Child a Candidate for Orthodontic Treatment?

Orthodontics is not just for improving the look of your smile – orthodontic treatment improves malocclusions, or bad bites. These bad bites occur as a result of tooth or jaw misalignment and can affect the way you smile, chew, clean your teeth or feel about your smile.

The Importance of Treating Malocclusions

The American Association of Orthodontists states untreated malocclusions can result in a variety of problems, including:

  • Crowded teeth, which are more difficult to properly brush and floss, leading to tooth decay and gum disease.
  • Protruding teeth that are more susceptible to accidental chipping.
  • Crossbites, which result in unfavorable growth and uneven tooth wear.
  • Open bites that can result in tongue-thrusting habits and speech impediments.

Ultimately, orthodontics does more than make a pretty smile – it creates a healthier you.
